What size slate hearth do I need for a wood burner?
Measure your stove. Building regulations (Approved Document J) say the hearth must reach at least 150mm beyond each side of the stove and at least 225mm in front of a stove run with its door closed. Most installers work to 300mm in front, because most stoves can be run with the door open. A freestanding stove needs a hearth of at least 840 × 840mm.
Example: a stove 450mm wide and 400mm deep needs about 750mm of width, so a 900mm-wide slab is right. Your stove manual and your HETAS-registered installer have the final say. Need an odd size? Cut to Size makes it.
What's the difference between riven, honed and brushed slate?
Riven is the natural split face: textured and traditional. Honed is machined flat and smooth. Brushed sits between the two: the texture is softened, with a low sheen. Screens don't show stone colour well, so order up to 2 free samples (£5 postage) to compare them. Prefer a limestone look? See our limestone hearths in black and grey.
Should I choose a 20mm or 30mm slate hearth?
20mm suits most wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves laid on a suitable base. 30mm (riven and brushed) gives a heavier, more substantial look for larger stoves and inglenooks. Our hearth thickness guide explains more.
Can I get a slate hearth cut to my exact size?
Yes. Cut to Size cuts riven, honed or brushed slate to your exact size, up to three matching pieces from one slab, for one cutting charge, in our Milton Keynes workshop. Standard is delivered within 14 days, Priority within 7. The page prices your hearth as you type the sizes.
How much is delivery, and how quickly will it arrive?
Delivery is £78 per order by pallet, kerbside, to England and Wales, and £130 for oversized slabs. Express is also available. You can collect free from Milton Keynes. Each product page shows your delivered-by date before you buy. For Scotland, Northern Ireland and the islands, call 01908 46 46 56 for a quote. See Delivery.
What happens if my hearth cracks?
Fit your hearth within 14 days of delivery. If it cracks in that time, we replace it free, delivery included. Email sales@blueskystone.com with your order number and photos. See the 14-day crack guarantee.
Will I see my slab before it is sent?
Yes, for Premium grade slabs and any order with Cut to Size or sealing. We photograph your actual slab in our Milton Keynes workshop and email it to you before it is packed.
Is slate safe for a wood-burning stove?
Yes. Slate is non-combustible and naturally heat-resistant, and it is one of the most common hearth materials in the UK. Your installer checks that the hearth size and the base beneath it suit your stove.
