Crack Guarantee
If your slab cracks within 14 days of delivery, provided it was installed in that window, we replace it completely free.
Free Photo Service
Every brushed order includes a photo of your exact slab before dispatch — not a stock image, the piece with your name on it.
Guaranteed Level Surface
Calibrated flat to ±1mm. The brushed grain is a surface texture, not undulation — the slab beds down without packing and your stove does not rock.

On every slab — no exceptions
  • Cracks within 14 days, we replace it free Photograph it, send it, we send another. No argument. It must have been installed and reported within 14 days of delivery.
  • Dressed edges included, not charged for Sides honed to remove saw marks, top edges chamfered. On riven slate that is workshop work you pay for; on brushed it comes as standard.
  • 28-day returns on stock sizes Unused, in its original packaging. You arrange and pay the return carriage — it is a palletised slab, so it is not cheap, and we would rather say that here. Cut-to-size cannot come back.
  • Container-direct, from our own yard No middleman and no showroom markup. You buy from the yard that imports it, at yard prices.
Choices you only get here
  • + Three surfaces, not twobrushed slate — only us Riven, honed and brushed — all from the same Brazilian quarry. Most suppliers stop at two, and brushed is the one they skip.
  • + One grade, because brushing settles it Riven slate is hand-sorted for tone, because a split face varies. The wire brush takes every slab to the same texture and the same graphite tone, so there is nothing left to sort — and one price for each size.
  • + Sealed in our workshop, or not at all Deep Clean & Seal if you want it fitted-and-finished. Leave it off and oil it yourself — we don't mind which.
  • + A photo of your actual slab Included on every brushed order. Not a stock image — the piece with your name on it.

We cut rectangles, squares and the two-piece T-set. If your opening needs a circle, a teardrop or a one-piece T, we're not your supplier — and we'll say so rather than waste your time.

Overview

Container-direct Brazilian black brushed slate hearths, supplied by Bluesky Stone Direct from Milton Keynes and Colchester. Three stock sizes in 20mm, two in 30mm, all from the same quarry, all held in stock.

Brushed is the textured one. The face is calibrated flat, then mechanically wire-brushed to open a fine directional grain — matte, tactile, and the grippiest of our three finishes underfoot. If you want a mirror-flat satin face, buy the honed hearth; if you want the natural split texture, buy the riven hearth.

Stock sizes, weights and crate quantities
Size Thickness Weight Slabs per crate
1200 × 900 20mm 61 kg 15
1500 × 900 20mm 76 kg 12
1200 × 1200 20mm 81 kg 10
1200 × 900 30mm 91 kg 10
1500 × 900 30mm 113 kg 10

All slabs are calibrated to ±1mm with dressed edges as standard — sides honed to remove saw marks, top edges chamfered. 1200 × 1200 is made in 20mm only. Every slab is a two-person lift and is delivered kerbside on a pallet; at 113 kg the 1500 × 900 × 30mm is the heaviest hearth we stock.

Why brushed has no Standard or Premium grade

On riven slate we hand-sort by tone, because a split face varies from slab to slab. Brushing removes that variable — the wire process takes every slab to the same texture and the same graphite tone. There is one grade because there is nothing left to sort, and one price for each size.

On every slab
  • 14-Day Crack Guarantee. If your slab cracks after installation, we replace it free of charge — provided it was installed and the crack reported within 14 days of delivery.
  • Dressed edges included. Sides honed, top edges chamfered. No raw saw lines to dress on site — on riven that is chargeable work.
  • Container-direct pricing. Brazilian slate bought by the container, not through a UK middleman.
  • Free pre-dispatch photo of your actual slab, on every order, before it leaves us.
  • Samples. Up to two free samples for a flat £5 delivery. Order a sample — brushed is a finish worth feeling before you commit.
Technical specification
  • Thickness: 20mm or 30mm calibrated, ±1mm
  • Surface: mechanically wire-brushed, fine directional texture, zero cleft
  • Edge: dressed as standard — sides honed, top edges chamfered
  • Slip resistance: PTV 62 dry / PTV 49 wet — low slip risk
  • Flexural strength: 19.6 MPa after 48 freeze-thaw cycles
  • Water absorption: under 0.50% — high frost resistance
  • Colour: graphite grey to black in its raw state. Sealing takes it to a noticeably deeper, darker tone.
  • Suitability: designed for the weight and radiant heat of a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove. Not for direct flame contact.
20mm or 30mm?

Same stone, same finish, same test results. 30mm is heavier, more forgiving of an uneven bed, and reads as a more substantial slab in the room. 20mm suits most standard openings and is easier to handle. 30mm is made in 1200 × 900 and 1500 × 900 only.

How it arrives
  • Unsealed — included. Ships from stock in 3–5 working days.
  • Deep Clean & Seal — £75. Deep-cleaned to remove quarry dust, then two coats of Stovax Dressing Oil. Sealing settles into the brushed texture and deepens the tone considerably. 3–5 working days.
  • Signature Package — £125 (14 working days) or £175 express (7 working days). The full job: cut to your size, honed sides, eased edges, deep cleaned and sealed.

Express delivery barely helps a Signature order — the time is in the workshop, not on the lorry. We would rather tell you that than take the extra carriage. Maximum in-house cut length is 1200mm; send drawings to sales@blueskystone.com for anything longer.

Delivery and collection
  • Delivery to England and Wales is priced at checkout — no quote needed, and charged per order rather than per slab.
  • Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Islands — costs vary by postcode, so we quote individually. Call 01908 46 46 56 or email sales@blueskystone.com.
  • Collection from Milton Keynes (MK8 8DD) is booked at checkout, ready within 24 hours.
  • Collection from Colchester (CO6 2JX) is arranged by phone — call 01908 46 46 56.
  • Delivered kerbside by pallet via a nationwide carrier.
Buying by the crate?

Full crates carry a per-slab rate exactly 10% below the single-slab price and ship free to England and Wales. Crate quantities vary by size — 15 slabs for 1200×900×20mm, 12 for 1500×900×20mm, and 10 for every other size. See the full-crate page for crate pricing, or open a trade account.

Returns

28 days on stock sizes. You arrange and pay return carriage — worth knowing up front, because this is a pallet item and that is not a small cost. Bespoke Signature cuts cannot be returned.
