Natural Riven slate FAQ

What is a Natural Riven finish?

Riven slate is split along its natural cleavage rather than sawn flat, giving it a textured, slightly uneven surface with genuine natural variation piece to piece — the traditional look most people picture when they think of a slate hearth.

Is Riven slate slip-resistant?

Yes — the natural texture gives Riven more grip than a Honed finish, which is one reason it's a popular choice directly in front of a stove door.

Does Riven slate need sealing?

Not essential, but our Deep Clean & Seal service is available as an add-on if you want extra stain resistance and a slightly richer colour.

What thickness should I choose, 20mm or 30mm?

20mm suits most standard stove installations. 30mm is typically specified for larger or more exposed hearths, or where a heavier, more substantial look is wanted.

How does Riven compare to Honed or Brushed?

Riven is the most textured and traditional. Honed is flat and smooth. Brushed sits between the two — see our full Slate Hearths range to compare all three.
