Coping FAQs

How many coping slabs do I need?

Each slab covers 0.8 m of wall. Divide your length in metres by 0.8 and round up. Our calculator does this for you and adds 10% for cuts and breakages. Example: 18.5 m ÷ 0.8 = 23.1, plus 10% = 25.4, so order 26 slabs.

Does the 0.8 m allow for mortar joints?

No. We keep it simple and count 0.8 m per slab. Joints of around 10 mm add a little length per slab, which works in your favour, and the 10% allowance covers corner and end cuts.

Why add 10%?

Coping is cut at corners, piers and ends, and natural stone can break in handling. Ordering 10% extra means you finish the job in one go and the spares match. You can untick it if you have measured exactly.

Is the coping sealed?

No. Our coping comes unsealed, single slabs and full crates. Seal it on site after laying for a deeper colour and easier cleaning, using an impregnating sealer made for limestone. Never use an acid cleaner on limestone.

Fitting
  • Lay on a traditional mortar bed or an exterior-grade adhesive. Point with mortar or exterior-grade grout.
  • Seal after laying if you want the deep black look. Use an impregnating sealer made for limestone.
  • Never use an acid cleaner. Acid reacts with limestone and leaves it milky white.
  • Natural stone: shade and markings vary from slab to slab.
